This week it's all about film festivals for kids and teens!
Reel Youth Film Festival
• Filmmakers age 19 and under
• Deadline December 10th, 2010
In partnership with the Vancouver International Film Festival, the Reel Youth Film Festival is a touring festival that brings a showcase of work by young filmmakers to cities across Canada and sometimes internationally. The festival is currently accepting submissions of short films and videos with a maximum length of ten minutes, including credits. A $20 submission fee applies.
Sprockets is the Toronto International Film Festival for Children and in 2011 it will be taking place from April 5th to 17th. There are currently two opportunities for youth available with the festival:
Sprockets 2011 Film Festival Jury Call
• For anyone who resides in Canada or the US* who will be between the ages of 8 and 12 as of April 5th 2011
• Deadline February 11th, 2011
Every year three Young People's Juries - two for feature films by age and one for short films - are selected to pick the films that will win the Golden Sprocket Awards. Jury members are given free admission, reserved seats, and snacks for all the films their jury needs to watch. *Please note that while kids from all over North America are welcome to apply, out-of-town jury members will need to provide their own transportation to and accommodation in Toronto.
Sprockets Jump Cuts Young Filmmakers Showcase 2011
• Ontario residents in grades three to twelve
• Deadline Monday March 7th, 2011
Sprockets is now accepting short film and video submissions in three age categories for the annual Jump Cuts portion of the festival. Films from those in grades 3-6 and grades 7-9 may not be longer than ten minutes, while films from those in grades 10-12 may be up to fifteen minutes. All films must have been completed after January 1st, 2010. There is no fee to submit. You can view some of the films from previous years in the Jump Cuts Gallery.
The Santa Monica Teen Film Festival
• International filmmakers 12-18 years old
• Deadline Friday March 4th, 2011
The Santa Monica Teen Film Festival is accepting submissions of films of any genre or style, suitable for all ages, that run between 30 seconds and 30 minutes long. Teen filmmakers can be from anywhere in the world, and do not need to be present at the festival to win an award (although some prizes are gift certificates, which may be for local stores). There's no fee to enter or attend. The 2011 festival will run on April 30th and May 1st.
